TAHNYC's story begins with founder Irene Barsky's life-changing experience. After developing a contact allergy to parabens and the entire botanical Sunflower Family (Asteraceae family), which includes over 30,000 species like chamomile and calendula, Irene's world turned upside down. The allergic reactions left her face, neck, and body covered in painful pustules, and even after removing all allergens, her skin remained exceptionally reactive and sensitized.

"I finally knew what was wrong, but I wasn't prepared for skin sensitization which left me with only one skin care option: water," Irene recalls. This struggle became a lonely journey that affected her confidence and every aspect of her life.

The Whole Foods Epiphany

The moment TAHNYC was born came unexpectedly in a Whole Foods store. While looking for a dish sponge, Irene picked up a Twist Naked Sponge and had a revelation: "Wait, I can pick up a filler-free sponge, I can get filler-free toothpaste, but I can't find filler-free skincare!?!"

This moment sparked the fundamental question: "We have the choice to remove fillers from our food. Shouldn't we have the choice to remove fillers from our skin?"
