Sarah Bray spent her twenties and early thirties as a writer and editor in New York City, contributing to some of the most prestigious shelter and lifestyle publications in the country — House Beautiful, ELLE Decor, Veranda, Town & Country, Hamptons, and more. She had a front-row seat to the world of luxury fashion and design. And then, slowly, she started to question everything she was helping to sell.

The Disenchantment

It wasn’t a sudden break. It was a gradual, honest reckoning with what it meant to spend a career glamorizing consumption. Sarah loved beautiful things — she still does. She has a deep appreciation for art history, decorative arts, and the craft behind great design. But the gap between that love and the reality of what she was promoting — non-essential luxury goods produced and discarded at scale — became impossible to ignore.

“I honestly grew disenchanted with promoting the over-consumption of luxury goods for a living. I was conflicted: I love beautiful things and art history, but glamorizing wasteful, non-essential products started to hugely conflict with my ethics and love of our planet.”

— Sarah Bray, Founder of Sarah Bray Bermuda

That conflict is what makes Sarah’s story so compelling. She didn’t leave fashion journalism because she stopped caring about beauty. She left because she cared too much — about beauty, and about the world it exists in.

Bermuda, and a New Beginning

Right before COVID, Sarah moved to Bermuda — a mid-Atlantic island she’d come to love through her husband, whose family has been rooted there since the 1600s (they shipwrecked on the island, as the story goes). The move gave her space to step back, realign her values, and ask a question she’d been circling for years: how do you build a career around beautiful things without contributing to the problem?

“I took some time off to realign my career values and brainstorm how I could make a living around inspirational, but not wasteful, shopping.”

— Sarah Bray

The answer she arrived at was elegant in its simplicity: start with materials that honor the earth, design things that are genuinely beautiful, and be completely honest about the limitations of what “sustainable” can actually mean.

Biodegradable Sun Hats — The Collection

Sarah’s debut collection is built around biodegradable sun hats — woven from sea grass and palm leaf, adorned with vintage floral ribbons, and finished with made-in-USA grosgrain. The hat bodies are designed to disintegrate quickly in landfills, a level of end-of-life intentionality that most fashion brands never think about, let alone plan for.

What Goes Into Every Hat

  • Sea grass and palm leaf — natural, biodegradable base materials woven by hand
  • Vintage floral ribbons — antique materials given a second life
  • Made-in-USA grosgrain — supporting domestic production
  • Antique and recycled elements — reducing waste through intentional reuse
  • Landfill-disintegrating construction — designed with end-of-life in mind

Each hat is a small act of resistance against the throwaway culture Sarah spent years writing about. They’re beautiful, they’re wearable, and when their life is over, they return to the earth.

Honest About What “Sustainable” Can and Can’t Mean

One of the most refreshing things about Sarah Bray Bermuda is the refusal to overclaim. In an industry full of greenwashing, Sarah is upfront about the fact that no non-essential brand can truly call itself sustainable — shipping has a carbon footprint, full stop. What she commits to instead is doing as much as she can, as honestly as she can, and being transparent about the rest.

“While I don’t think calling a non-essential brand ‘sustainable’ is possible (after all, nothing about the shipping process, even if using recycled packaging, goes without a carbon footprint!), I am committed to trying to be as sustainable as possible where I can.”

— Sarah Bray

That kind of honesty is rare. It’s also exactly what conscious consumers are looking for — not perfection, but integrity.

Art History Meets Environmental Ethics

What makes Sarah’s aesthetic so distinctive is the tension at its heart: a deep love of art history and decorative craft, filtered through a rigorous environmental conscience. The vintage ribbons aren’t just a design choice — they’re a statement about the value of what already exists. The biodegradable construction isn’t a compromise — it’s the point. Beauty and responsibility aren’t opposites in Sarah’s world. They’re the same thing.

A Love Letter to Sunshine

Sarah’s message to her customers is simple: “I hope you enjoy your sun hats and take some time to soak up the sunshine!” It’s a reminder that fashion, at its best, is about enhancing the moments that matter — not accumulating things for their own sake. A hat that makes you feel good in the sun, made from materials that won’t outlast the planet. That’s the whole idea.

Meet the Founder

Sarah Bray — former NYC fashion editor, Bermuda transplant, and the designer behind one of the most honestly sustainable hat collections we’ve ever carried.

Sarah’s path from House Beautiful to biodegradable sun hats is a story about what happens when someone with a genuine love of beauty decides to stop making excuses for the industry and start building something better. Her Texas roots, her Bermudian family, her years in New York media — all of it feeds into a perspective that is at once deeply aesthetic and deeply ethical.

She’s not trying to save the world with a hat. She’s trying to make something beautiful that doesn’t cost the world anything it can’t afford to give.

Why Sarah Bray Bermuda Belongs in Your Wardrobe

At Daily Health & Beauty, we carry Sarah Bray Bermuda because her story is the kind we want to tell — honest, thoughtful, and rooted in genuine values rather than marketing language. Her sun hats are beautiful objects made with real intention, from materials that honor the earth, by a designer who has thought carefully about every choice. If you’re going to wear a hat in the sun, it might as well be one that was made with this much care.
