We're inspired to introduce Sarah Bray Bermuda, a remarkable designer whose journey from NYC fashion editor to sustainable island creator represents a beautiful transformation of values and purpose. After years of writing for prestigious publications like House Beautiful, ELLE Decor, and Town & Country, Sarah moved to Bermuda and launched a collection made from antique, vintage, recycled, and biodegradable materials—proving that beautiful fashion can honor both style and our planet.
From NYC Fashion Journalism to Ethical Awakening
For her twenties and early thirties, Sarah was a writer and editor in New York City, penning articles for House Beautiful, ELLE Decor, Veranda, Town & Country, Hamptons, Beach, and more. "It was an amazing experience to learn about and report on so many fashion and decor brands of all shapes, sizes, and styles."
The Growing Disenchantment
"However, I honestly grew disenchanted with promoting the over-consumption of luxury goods for a living. I was conflicted: I love beautiful things and art history (decorative and fashion history included), but glamorizing wasteful, non-essential products started to hugely conflict with my ethics and love of our planet."
The Bermuda Transformation
Right before COVID, Sarah moved to the mid-Atlantic island of Bermuda ("this Texan is luckily married to a Bermudian, whose family shipwrecked in Bermuda in the 1600s!") and took some time off to realign her career values and brainstorm how she could make a living around inspirational, but not wasteful, shopping.
A Mission to Stop Wasteful Consumption
"In an effort to stop adding non-essential waste to our beautiful world, I am launching a collection made from antique, vintage, recycled, and biodegradable materials." This commitment represents a complete reimagining of what fashion can be when ethics guide design.
Honest About Sustainability
"While I don't think calling a non-essential brand 'sustainable' is possible (after all, nothing about the shipping process, even if using recycled packaging, goes without a carbon footprint!), I am committed to trying to be as sustainable as possible where I can."
This refreshing honesty about the limitations of sustainability claims sets Sarah apart in an industry often filled with greenwashing.
Biodegradable Sun Hats: The Original Collection
Sarah chose biodegradable sun hats as her original fashion collection concept. These sun hat bodies are designed to disintegrate quickly in landfills, woven from sea grass and palm leaf, and adorned with vintage floral ribbons and made-in-USA grosgrain.
Materials That Honor the Earth
Sarah's collection features:
- Sea grass and palm leaf - Natural, biodegradable base materials
- Vintage floral ribbons - Giving new life to beautiful antique materials
- Made-in-USA grosgrain - Supporting domestic production
- Antique and vintage elements - Reducing waste through reuse
- Recycled materials - Minimizing environmental impact
A Love Letter to Sunshine
"I hope you enjoy your sun hats and take some time to soak up the sunshine!" This simple message reflects Sarah's understanding that fashion should enhance life's simple pleasures, like enjoying beautiful weather.
From Luxury Magazine Writing to Conscious Creation
Sarah's transition from writing about luxury consumption to creating conscious fashion represents a profound personal and professional evolution, showing how values can reshape careers in meaningful ways.
Bermudian Heritage and Island Life
Her connection to Bermuda through marriage (her husband's family shipwrecked there in the 1600s!) and her move to the island during COVID created the perfect environment for this values-driven transformation.
Art History Meets Environmental Ethics
Sarah's love of art history, decorative arts, and fashion history informs her aesthetic choices while her environmental ethics guide her material selections—creating a unique fusion of beauty and responsibility.
Inspirational, Not Wasteful Shopping
Sarah's goal to create "inspirational, but not wasteful, shopping" addresses a real need in the market for beautiful products that don't compromise environmental values.
Quick Landfill Disintegration
The fact that her sun hat bodies are designed to disintegrate quickly in landfills demonstrates thoughtful end-of-life planning that most fashion brands ignore.
Vintage and Antique Integration
By incorporating vintage floral ribbons and antique materials, Sarah gives new life to beautiful elements that might otherwise be discarded, creating unique pieces with history and character.
Career Values Realignment
Sarah's decision to take time off and realign her career values during the COVID period shows the courage required to make meaningful life changes that honor personal ethics.
Texas to Bermuda Journey
The journey from Texas to NYC fashion journalism to Bermuda sustainable design represents a geographic and philosophical evolution that enriches her unique perspective on fashion and sustainability.
Honest Carbon Footprint Acknowledgment
Sarah's acknowledgment that even sustainable brands have carbon footprints through shipping demonstrates the kind of honest transparency that builds genuine trust with conscious consumers.
