Shop Mickelberry Gardens ↓At Daily Health & Beauty, we’re inspired by Mickelberry Gardens — the story of husband and wife Matt and Madelyn, who started keeping bees in their Portland backyard in 2007. When Madelyn discovered she was extremely sensitive to honeybee stings, they didn’t give up — they found a solution. That solution became a business, and that business became one of the Pacific Northwest’s most beloved artisan wellness brands.
The Origin Story
Matt and Madelyn started keeping bees in their Portland backyard in 2007 after taking a class on organic beekeeping with local beekeeper Glen Andresen. Their hives grew from 2 to 7 — until Madelyn discovered she was extremely sensitive to honeybee stings.
Rather than give up, they connected with Farmer Dave in Troutdale and moved the bees to his 30-acre organic farm. Matt expanded to 20 hives. The surplus of honey, beeswax, and propolis gave Madelyn — who was passionate about garden medicine and medicinal plants — the raw materials to start experimenting in the kitchen.
After some trial and error, a few creations stood out. In 2011, they launched from a single farmer’s market booth in Portland’s Montavilla neighborhood. The response was hugely positive. Today, a staff of eleven crafts healing remedies using the finest Pacific Northwest ingredients available.
