Shedavi: Building Something Of Her Own

Long before Elizabeth Davis founded Shedavi, she was the person people turned to for hair. Growing up on Chicago’s South Side, she practiced styles on her mother, her sister, and herself. Her French braids were in demand, and by high school she had added blowouts and silk presses to her repertoire.

A silk press remains her favorite hairstyle. But the route from those early styling sessions to her own hair-care company took her through college, construction sites, and a deeply personal reconsideration of her routine.

A New Climate, Familiar Challenges

In Florida, Elizabeth studied architecture and construction engineering. The humidity brought its own lessons: her signature style did not hold up as she wanted, and she continued relaxing her hair.

Hair remained part of college life all the same. She often did her friends’ hair in the dorms, carrying an interest that had begun at home into a new community.

A Builder By Profession

After college, Elizabeth became a project manager in building construction, working on major projects around the country. The work deepened her appreciation for creativity, ownership, and the satisfaction of bringing something into existence.

Hair was still her way to unwind. Away from the demands of construction, she went natural and spent time learning techniques for caring for her own hair. What had always been a passion became a more deliberate personal journey.

A Closer Look At Ingredients

When members of Elizabeth’s family faced difficult health diagnoses, she began looking more closely at the ingredients in the products they used every day. That concern led her into research on botanical ingredients and hair-care practices from around the world.

The original vitamin-and-elixir pairing became the foundation. Elizabeth worked with a cGMP-compliant manufacturer for the vitamins and made the first 1,000 units of elixir by hand.

In 2016, she launched Shedavi online. The response gave the idea momentum, and in 2018 the Crowned Collection expanded the brand into conditioning and styling care.

In 2023, Shedavi refreshed its original products with new custom packaging, which the brand describes as incorporating recycled and sustainable materials. The development of the collection continued, while the personal purpose behind it stayed in view.
