What Is Glutathione — And Why Is It Called The Master Antioxidant?
Glutathione is produced in every cell of your body and is the most powerful antioxidant you've never heard of. Here's what it does, why levels decline, and what the science says about restoring them.

That antioxidant is glutathione. And understanding what it does — and what happens when levels decline — is one of the most important things you can learn about your own biology.
The short answer: Glutathione is a tripeptide molecule produced in every cell of your body. It neutralizes free radicals, drives liver detoxification, regenerates other antioxidants, and protects your DNA. It's called the "master antioxidant" because it sits at the center of your entire antioxidant defense network — and when it declines, everything else becomes less effective.
What Is Glutathione?
Glutathione (GSH) is a small molecule made from three amino acids: glutamine, glycine, and cysteine. Unlike most antioxidants you consume through food or supplements, glutathione is synthesized endogenously — meaning your body makes it from scratch, inside every cell.
Vitamin C and vitamin E are dietary antioxidants — you have to consume them to have them. Glutathione is a cellular antioxidant — your body manufactures it continuously as long as it has the raw materials to do so. The liver produces the highest concentrations, but glutathione is present and active in every tissue — your lungs, kidneys, brain, skin, immune cells, and mitochondria all depend on it.
Why Is It Called The Master Antioxidant?
Most antioxidants work by donating an electron to neutralize a free radical — becoming oxidized and spent in the process. Glutathione is different in two critical ways:
1. It Recycles Other Antioxidants
When vitamin C neutralizes a free radical, it becomes dehydroascorbic acid — oxidized and inactive. Glutathione converts it back into active vitamin C. The same applies to vitamin E. Without adequate glutathione, your other antioxidant supplements are far less effective.
2. It Can Regenerate Itself
After neutralizing a free radical, glutathione becomes oxidized GSSG. The enzyme glutathione reductase converts GSSG back into active GSH — meaning glutathione can be reused repeatedly, making it far more efficient than single-use antioxidants.
The network effect: When glutathione is depleted, vitamin C and E become less effective, oxidative stress accelerates, and cellular damage compounds across every system in the body.
What Does Glutathione Actually Do?

Glutathione directly neutralizes reactive oxygen species (ROS) — including hydrogen peroxide, lipid peroxides, and hydroxyl radicals — that damage cell membranes, proteins, and DNA. It's particularly critical in mitochondria, where free radical production is highest.
