Dr. Donald “Doug” Strobel could handle the demands of a neurology practice, but battered runners’ feet were another matter. When endurance races brought him face to face with his own trail-worn skin, he wanted a balm he would actually enjoy carrying and using.

That practical question took him into the kitchen. With plenty of trial, error, and honest feedback from runners, patients, and family, an original formula took shape. It became Miracle Balm, the starting point for Dr. Doug’s Balms.

A Roundabout Road To The First Jar

Doug’s path to medicine began with service in the Marines and time as a Navy pilot. He later earned a medical degree at UT Health San Antonio, following studies in chemistry, biology, and human and medical genetics.

In practice as a neurologist since 2003, he brought a scientific background and an interest in people’s everyday experiences to his next project. Endurance training added a very personal reason to think about the products he put on his skin.

Made With The Long Run In Mind

The first balm was meant to be a practical companion, not another complicated routine. Doug wanted something portable and straightforward, shaped by what he encountered on long runs and adventure races.

The feedback loop stayed close to real life. Family members, runners, and people he knew helped him refine what he was making, turning a personal experiment into something he wanted to share more widely.

The Original Formula’s Foundation

Original Miracle Balm brings together organic coconut oil, olive oil, beeswax, shea butter, lavender and peppermint essential oils, and vitamin E. Its water-free format gives it a different feel from a lotion.

Other products take their own direction from that starting point, so check the particular formula rather than assuming every item has the same ingredients. The magnesium and recovery blends add different components, while Baby Balm follows a simplified approach.

Co-founder Natalie Gardner brought nearly two decades of biotech experience to the project. When Doug shared his early race balms with her, she saw an idea worth bringing beyond their own circle.
