In 2017, a friend’s request for a dessert with sunflower butter and dark chocolate sent Robbie Madfis into the kitchen. A whole California Medjool date became the starting point, with a spiced filling and a coating of 75% dark chocolate bringing the idea together.

The recipe’s foundation brings together non-GMO California Medjool dates, single-origin 75% dark chocolate from Republic del Cacao, sunflower butter from SunButter, and directly sourced spices from Burlap & Barrel.

Republic del Cacao is B-Corp certified. SunButter makes its sunflower butter in North Dakota using U.S.-grown sunflowers. Burlap & Barrel is a Public Benefit Corporation working with smallholder farmers around the world.

A Clear Look At Sugar

Each 90g pouch holds three whole stuffed dates and contains 6g of fiber. Added sugar is approximately 2g per date, or approximately 6g per pouch.

Added sugar is only part of total sugar: dates also contain naturally occurring sugar. The finished product has no verified glycemic-index measurement. Read the current nutrition label rather than using the added-sugar amount to predict a blood-sugar response.
