The Mickelberry Gardens Standard✦ When A Bee Sting Became A New Beginning
Matt and Madelyn began keeping bees in their Portland backyard in 2007 after taking an organic beekeeping class. Their small apiary grew, but Madelyn soon discovered she was extremely sensitive to honeybee stings.
Instead of walking away from the bees, they moved the hives to Farmer Dave’s 30-acre organic farm in Troutdale. The honey, beeswax, and propolis they gathered gave Madelyn the ingredients to explore the garden medicine and medicinal plant traditions she already loved.
From Backyard Hives To A Portland Workshop
Early experiments became products with a loyal following. Mickelberry Gardens launched from a single farmer’s market booth in Portland’s Montavilla neighborhood in 2011, then grew into more markets, wholesale relationships, and a larger production facility.
