A Taste Of Galway, A Home In Richmond
Family recipes, Irish roots, and a warm welcome from Two And A Half Irishmen.
Shop The BakehouseFor Niall Duffy, the journey from Galway to Richmond began with a love story. He met his future wife in a pub while she was visiting her father’s hometown, the same Irish town Niall called home. They fell in love, and eventually made their life together in Richmond, Virginia.
Far from Ireland, familiar recipes offered a connection to home. Proofing dough, making Irish scones, and recreating the baking he had inherited from his mother became a way to keep that connection close.
Out of those family traditions grew Two And A Half Irishmen, a family-operated micro bakery founded in 2015. Its story brings together recipes from Niall’s past and ingredients from the place he now calls home.
A Festival, A Few Samples, And A Beginning
Niall’s background was in chemistry, not a conventional path into running a bakery. But he had family recipes, a natural feel for baking, and an opportunity to share them.
At the Richmond Irish Festival in 2015, he offered samples of Irish soda bread and traditional tea brack, a fruit-studded “speckled bread.” The response suggested that the comfort he found in those recipes could reach other people, too.
Afterward, his wife put that possibility into words:
“I think this could be something.”
The Encouragement That Helped Start The BakeryA Little Castle In Richmond
The family’s market tent has become part of the bakery’s identity. Regulars at the RVA Big Market know it as “The Castle,” a fitting nickname for a small gathering place with Irish roots and a generous welcome.
Niall and his children are part of that market story, while the baked goods have also found their way into regional shops and markets. What began with samples has become a way to share a taste of home with a much wider table.
The collection makes space for both tradition and play. Soda breads and buttermilk scones sit alongside fruit-filled cakes, chocolate zucchini bread, and savory combinations that draw on life in Virginia.
Begin With The Irish Favorites
Brown Soda Bread
A simple full loaf made with whole wheat flour, buttermilk, baking soda, and salt. Slice it for the breakfast table or serve it alongside soup and a generous lunch.
The Waterford Blaa
A soft, floury roll offered here as a vegan two-pack. A lovely starting point for a filled roll or a simple bread-and-spread moment.
Tea Brack
The Turkish Fig & Apricot Tea Brack gives a traditional favorite a fruit-filled variation. The bakehouse soaks the fruit in strong black tea for three days before baking with spices.
Put The Kettle On
Traditional Irish Buttermilk Fruit Scones bring together real buttermilk and raisins in a two-pack made for a cup of tea and a pause in the day. Add butter and jam if you like, or enjoy the fruit and tender crumb on their own.
Blueberry Blast, Cranberry Orange Zest, and Chocolate Raspberry Buttermilk Scones offer other ways to choose your afternoon favorite. The gluten-free scone listings include options such as Blueberry Blast, Lemon Lavender, and Orchard Peach Cream.
For a savory turn, explore Sun Dried Tomato, Basil & Black Peppercorn, Jalapeño Dubliner Irish Cheese, or Hot Southern Honey Dubliner Irish Cheese Scones. They bring a different kind of character to brunch or a plate of soup.
Galway Apples, Virginia Peaches
Traditional Irish Galway Apple Cake carries the hometown connection in its name. Granny Smith apples, a little spice, and a crunchy brown-sugar topping make it a welcoming choice for dessert or an afternoon slice.
Virginia Peach Cobbler Cake celebrates the other side of the bakery’s story, with peaches and warming spices. Its vegan recipe uses unsweetened applesauce in place of eggs.
Blackberry Lemon Zest Cake and Strawberry Vanilla Cream Cake bring more fruit-led choices to the collection. The seasonal spirit is part of the pleasure: choose the flavors that sound right for the moment and check the current selection for availability.
Chocolate, Citrus, And A Little Stout
The Jaffa Cake is the bakery’s loaf-style homage to the chocolate-and-orange favorite from Ireland and the UK. Fresh orange juice and zest meet dark chocolate pieces in a zucchini-based bake, with traditional, vegan, and gluten-free versions listed separately.
Guinness & Chocolate Porter Cake pairs stout with chocolate chips and spice. Traditional Irish Guinness Gingerbread takes a ginger-and-molasses direction, while Guinness Treacle Bread offers a darker loaf with molasses, brown sugar, and oats.
These are distinct recipes, not different names for the same cake. Choose chocolate and orange for a citrus lift, gingerbread for a spiced slice, or treacle bread alongside a savory meal.
Find Your Everyday Loaf
A Familiar Sweet Slice: Classic Banana Bread and Classic Zucchini Bread offer comforting starting points, with chocolate versions for a richer direction.
A Brighter Finish: Lemon Glazed Zucchini Bread and Blueberry Orange Juice Bread bring citrus into the mix.
Something Savory: Lemon & Rosemary Savory Loaf and Orange & Sage Bread offer full-loaf vegan choices. Potato “Farl” Dinner Rolls are the bakery’s individual-roll interpretation of Irish potato bread.
Choose The Version That Fits Your Table
Several favorites have separate traditional, vegan, or gluten-free listings. Check the complete product name and ingredients when choosing; a gluten-free bake may still contain milk or eggs, and a vegan loaf may contain wheat or soy.
For allergies or celiac disease, review the current label and confirm cross-contact information before ordering. Loaf sizes also vary: many sweet bakes are half loaves, while certain breads are full loaves and many scones come as two-packs.
Why We Carry Two And A Half Irishmen
We appreciate a bakery that lets its family history remain part of the food. Niall’s recipes connect his mother’s kitchen, the place he grew up, and the city where his own family has made a home.
There is room for a traditional loaf and something unexpected, a familiar scone and a new seasonal flavor. Put a few slices on the table, make a cup of tea, and enjoy a welcome that has traveled a long way.
