Burgundy or Auburn Red?

Both open with henna — unusual for us, since most of our shades start with indigo. The difference is what comes next.

Auburn Red has no manjistha at all, and its amla sits third. Burgundy puts manjistha third and hibiscus fourth, with the amla pushed down to fifth. Two red-carrying herbs high on the list and the acid that would cool them low: that is what makes wine rather than copper. Compare with Auburn Red →

Depending on the length of the hair, portion hair powder in the following amount:

• 1.1oz (one-third) – For short hair
• 2.2oz(one-half) – For shoulder-length hair
• 3.5oz – For waist length hair

What kind of colour this is

Red is the colour a bottle loses fastest. Red pigment molecules are the smallest and least light-stable of the lot — and once the cuticle has been lifted to put them in, it never closes back the way it was. That leaves an open route out.

Nothing is opened to put this colour there. Lawsone forms a covalent bond with keratin in the outer layers, so it wears as the hair wears rather than rinsing out.

• Contains indigo — there is a green cast at the first rinse, and it clears within a day
• Colours grey most vividly of all; on darker hair it reads as depth rather than a colour change

• Not suitable for anyone with a known indigo or plant-dye allergy — patch test first

What to expect over three days

• Right after rinsing — a green cast over the warmth. That's the indigo before it has met the air. Temporary.
• First 12 to 24 hours — the green clears and the henna comes forward, reading warmer and more orange than the finish.
• Days two and three — deepens into wine as the indigo, manjistha and hibiscus arrive. Judge your colour here.

Do not blow-dry. Not while the paste is on, and not for the first 24 hours after rinsing. Dry the paste and nothing transfers; dry the hair afterwards and the colour stalls partway. Shower cap while it processes, air-dry after.
