It needs a light base. Plant pigment adds and never lifts, so on medium brown hair a pale gold barely registers and on anything darker it won't show.

Depending on the length of the hair, portion hair powder in the following amount:

• 1.1oz (one-third) – For short hair
• 2.2oz(one-half) – For shoulder-length hair
• 3.5oz – For waist length hair

What kind of colour this is

Our browns and blacks all open the same way: indigo first, henna second. This shade uses the same three herbs, reordered. Colourless henna leads — a herb that hardly tints at all — and both colouring herbs sit below it.

That is the whole design. Not less henna doing less work, but a herb that doesn't dye taking up the space a pigment would otherwise fill. Henna gives the gold; the indigo behind it keeps that gold from running to copper.

• Contains indigo — there is a faint green cast at the first rinse, and it clears within a day

What to expect

• Right after rinsing — a faint green cast. That's the indigo before it has met the air. It clears within a day.
• First day or two — the green clears and the gold comes forward.
• Where it lands — a soft golden blonde. Judge it on day two, not the first evening.

Do not blow-dry. Not while the paste is on, and not for the first 24 hours after rinsing. Dry the paste and nothing transfers; dry the hair afterwards and the colour stops developing. Shower cap while it processes, air-dry after.
