How a plant makes violet

Blue plus a red with blue in it. Indigo leads the ingredient list and gives the blue. Hibiscus sits third, carrying cyanidin — an anthocyanin that reads magenta rather than plain red. Manjistha adds red depth underneath.

Every other shade we make has henna somewhere near the top, and henna gives one thing: a warm orange-red. Put that under a blue and you get brown, not violet. This is one of six shades where we leave it out entirely.

Depending on the length of the hair, portion hair powder in the following amount:

・1.1oz (one-third) – For short hair
・2.2oz(one-half) – For shoulder-length hair
・3.5oz – For waist length hair

What kind of colour this is

Conventional dye lifts your own pigment out and puts synthetic pigment in its place. This one doesn't lift anything — plant pigment layers over what you already have, so the cuticle stays shut and there is no damage to repair afterwards.

What to expect

• Right after rinsing — a green cast. That's the indigo before it has met the air. Temporary.
• First day — the green clears and the violet comes forward.
• Day two — the tone settles. Judge your colour here.

Do not blow-dry. Not while the paste is on, and not for the first 24 hours after rinsing. Dry the paste and nothing transfers; dry the hair afterwards and the colour stops developing. Shower cap while it processes, air-dry after.

One thing to know about wear: because there is no henna in this shade, the pigment is held in the outer layers rather than bonded to the keratin. It fades sooner than our henna-based colours and benefits from gentler washing.
