Wine Red, Burgundy or Mahogany?

Burgundy and Mahogany both open with henna and get their depth from indigo — a blue laid over a red.

Wine Red has no indigo at all. It opens with manjistha, the only shade we make that does, and builds depth from a second red pigment instead. That is why it reads as wine rather than as a red with brown in it — and why it has no green stage at the rinse. See all three on the colour chart →

Depending on the length of the hair, portion hair powder in the following amount:

• 1.1oz (one-third) – For short hair
• 2.2oz(one-half) – For shoulder-length hair
• 3.5oz – For waist length hair

What kind of colour this is

Red is the colour a bottle loses fastest. Red pigment molecules are the smallest and least light-stable of the lot — and once the cuticle has been lifted to put them in, it never closes back the way it was. That leaves an open route out.

Nothing is opened to put this colour there. Lawsone forms a covalent bond with keratin in the outer layers, so it wears as the hair wears rather than rinsing out.

What to expect

• Right after rinsing — brighter and warmer than the finished wine. Henna arrives first. No green cast.
• First day or two — the manjistha settles and the depth arrives.
• Where it lands — a deep wine red. Judge it on day two, not the first evening.

Worth trying: the acid step. Add 1–2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar to the mixed paste and let it rest 15–30 minutes before applying. Henna's pigment releases more readily in mildly acidic conditions. This works because there is no indigo in this shade — don't carry it over to Burgundy, Mahogany or any shade with indigo in it.
